There’s going to be a slight detour in our month of spooky giveaways, but I assure you, it is worth it. This week, we present to you: Goggles – World of Vaporia!

Gonna admit, I have not played this yet but it looks great and can be summed up as such: “a Steampunk-themed online co-op arena shooter”. That’s a mouthful, but try telling me that that does not sound appealing. Want to know the coolest part about it? Two of the in-game characters are voiced by Derek Forrest, a Tom’s Hardware writer! Derek has also been kind enough to provide us with six (6) game keys to give away, courtesy of the devs he worked with.

Is this a bit of shameless self-promotion? Sure, but we’ll do it anyway because this is pretty neat. If you’re curious about the game, we have an article up with some details on it, and there should be a hands-on video of it soon so look forward to that. Until then, let’s give some stuff away!

Here’s what we want to know: What is your favorite co-op or multiplayer game and what made it so awesome? Was it the game itself or was it the people? Is there a specific match or moment that you’ll always remember? Share your stories with us!

We’ll be announcing five winners this Friday. But wait, that doesn’t add up. Five winners for six keys? That’s right, because one lucky winner will receive two keys so they can give it to a friend and get their co-op on! This one will be picked by staff based on the story we liked best.

One final thing to mention this week. Our Steam group is at 996 members—we are less than a handful of people away from meeting our goal, so it’s time to reveal the big surprise! Click on the spoiler if you're curious!

This coming Friday (the 16th), we will be hosting a virtual shindig in the Steam group’s chat room! The Community team and members of the Editorial team will be lounging in the chat room throughout the day. This is a good chance to talk to the site’s writers and the get to know all the various staff and volunteers who keep this community chugging along. There will even be free goodies and games being given away all day so drop by, hang out, and try to win some stuff!

More details and the exact time will be revealed soon, so keep an eye out for the news post about it!

Contest will run until 12 PM EDT on Friday, October 16. That’s 12:00 noon. Winners will receive their prize as a Steam gift; a Steam account is required to receive and to play the game. One entry per user. Winners will be selected randomly from among eligible entries. Attempts to cheat the system will result in automatic disqualification.

Be sure to join our Steam group!

We’re actively looking for volunteers to write community reviews for games, so if you’re interested, please reach out to me for more details.

Goldeneye 007 on the N64

I was in the U.S. Army, active duty, living in the barracks. These were rooms suitable for 2 people, but we managed to squeeze 4 players with 4 to 8 more waiting in the wings at their chance to join in on deathmatch. There was a lot of beer, pizza, and laughter to be had.

I loved putting proximity mines on the ceilings :) It might have been the alcohol, but nobody ever seemed to catch on.

Call of Duty 4 promod on PC. I played that thing for 7 years, and played 2 year professionally with teams (TeamSoLow, Attack!, and CORE64. Riflers: xzo & duchebag SMGs: o_sNap & deadweight, Scope: PLZ (me)

I have to say that my favorite co-op game is Portal 2. The original Portal is one of my favorite games, and when I heard they were making co-op I was super excited. Both me and a friend got it and played through probably the first 2 or 3 sections in one sitting. It's a great game, and co-op is definitely more difficult than the base game and incorporates having two people in some really cool ways.
Congrats on the Steam group!

The multiplayer game I probably enjoyed the most was Battlefield 2. I played it for around 200+ hours. I enjoyed both normal servers and just infantry servers alike.

Lego Marvel Super Heroes. It's the only multiplayer game I've been able to play with my dad in years. He doesn't have much patience, so a game with little to no consequence for failure is perfect for him.

I may play some other Lego games with him at some point if I can get my 'gaming' laptop to not overheat. Probably just needs a clean.

The FIFA series. I know it is a little flawed and can get frustrating but one that helps me unwind and enjoy a nice few matches.

I may be stretching the modern definition of multi-player, but I have to vote for the way old school Tecmo Super Bowl for NES. Back in those olden days, multi-player meant walking to your friends house and plugging in a second controller. I am a data nerd, and at 11 years old I felt like I had found the Holy grail of video games. No more reading the sports section figuring and envisioning what it would take to get Montanas completion % up to 85, I could play it out as many times with as many players as I wanted. Friends at my house for at least a year knew what the agenda was when they came over, and having comraderie along with stats galore couldn't be beaten by a night with a supermodel and a bottle of Courvoisier VSOP fine cognac (again, considering I was 11). As good of times I had playing Tecmo with friends, I am having a hard time deciding which brought more to the table in terms of fun... I think I have to say they were both irreplaceable.

blacklight tango down...
hands down my favorite multiplayer experience. to bad it was games for windows live and no one on the pc played it for long so when i got to play it was 45 minutes to 4 hours between matches.

i loved being able to chose gun parts and there was no single optimal build, it was all largely your preference.

than blacklight retribution came... i hate the weapon depo, and i despise how they give out currency, in beta it was all skill based so the more kills the more reward, now its 1% skill based reward and mostly about time played.

its sad because this is one of the only games where headphones allow me to be able ti pinpoint where noise is coming from on a map... its weird how clear every sound is and how i know that that gunshot came from around the corner and its a the second floor of the room... god i miss that games beta... so much better than final product.

-- edit --

i should mention, if i get the 2 copies, give one out randomly as i have no friends who game on the pc, at least in games i have interest in.

I've had a lot of fun over the last few years with games like Trine 1 & 2 and Lara Croft GoL & ToS. I've played some epic games like Gears of War and I also had my share of MMORPGs. But the most fun I've had must have been with the first co-op game I've ever played, Contra for NES back in the day.

Boring answer, but the one I probably enjoyed the most would be Counter-Strike, if for no other reason than sheer amount of time spent.

Others that stand out:
TF2/TFC
L4D/L4D2
Rainbow 6 (over an IPX network, direct modem dialling with my friend)
(original) Doom over the modem (darn neon green armour)
Super Bomberman 2/3/4/5 (currently with coworkers at lunch)
Ghost Recon (remember, no shootie blue)
Street Fighter (so many versions/variants)

Pirates of the Carribean or the PS2, played it all day with my best buddy, not because we were good at it, because we had a whole lot of fun together, fun winning and failing. Used to cycle over to his house (5km up the hill) to spend all afternoon and evening there.

I played a lot of Halo 1, 2 & 3 multiplayer. A friend and I would get together and do ranked duos. It was towards the end of high school, and we would stay up late playing over Xbox Live. I played a lot of Diablo 1 & 2 and enjoyed that. Timesplitters was good for parties as well, very fast placed.

Favorite multi-player is Supreme Commander II. My son and I and some of his friends love to play and conquer. I have learned I like my son on my team as he is very good.

Our fallback of course is Counter Strike Source. Always fun for a quick game.

I got to play mostly on all Nintendo, and had a lot of fun with my school buddies and cousins: Contra, Jackal, Bases Loaded, NBA Jam, Age of Empires 2... but if I have to choose one, that would be T.M.N.T. 2 in the NES, both because all the fun and because the turtles were all the **** back then.

Cowabunga!

Hmm, I don't think I have a favorite coop game or multiplayer game since I mostly enjoy single player experiences. I've had some fun multiplayer and coop experiences over the years however, so I'll talk about the one that was most marking, which would be the first one.

Back when I was a young teen in school, we used to have computer classes. I can't quite recall the content, but I remember learning to type faster with some typing games - and when we were done early, we could do whatever we wanted! Now, I have no idea who installed those, but when you put 16+ kids in a room filled with computers connected in LAN with Duke Nukem and Age of Empires installed on them, there is a very strong incentive to finish the exercises early. :)

I had a lot of fun with age of empires, because I liked building my fortifications, creating armies and sending them out, but honestly it was no contest for Duke Nukem as a multiplayer game. That game was very simple: you ran around and shot stuff with awesome weapons. Occasionally you placed mines and tried not to self kill. It was really easy to get into and we would play in random teams or each for himself and compete. It was awesome. 😀 I recall trying the single player for Duke Nukem once and I only found it boring. Killing monsters was just boring compared to the mayhem of multiplayer with the entire classroom.

And now that I'm remembering those times, we also used to play Lode runner🙂 The Legend returns). IIRC you could play with another person on the same keyboard? And we used to try and deviously trap each other instead of working together to clear the levels. XD

So yeah, Duke Nukem 3D for the win. :)

Sorry to keep it brief, but we are over in the Steam chat talking and hanging out. Let's get on with the winners!

Our staff pick: jakjawagon!

Playing a superhero game with your dad is awesome. That sounds like a great father/son bonding experience!

The rest of our winners include:

kfadely
Nachoman64
delware
alidan

Congrats guys! I'll try to get the PM's with instructions on how to claim the game out to everybody today, but if I can't, I'll try to do it over the weekend. Apologies for the inconvenience, but the Steam event is taking quite a bit of my attention! Do come by and join us if you get the chance :)

Serious Sam is fun co-op, but I haven't played all that many games. For instance I haven't played Minecraft.

I'd pick Serious Sam over Terraria though.

Oh. I'm too late. Whatever. Multiplayer: Warcraft III and Quake? =P
